FIRST SERIES OF LECTURES: GRECO-ROMAN ANTIQUITY
First Lecture
Dr Maria Gerolemou (John’s Hopkins University)
“Technological Automata and Intelligent Machines in Greco-Roman Antiquity”
SUMMARY
The technological marvels of Graeco-Roman antiquity include the construction of ancient mechanisms, self-operating objects, and mechanical devices that functioned in striking ways. These inventions were not concerned solely with science, entertainment, and aesthetics, but often possessed practical utility as well. Many of these marvels were employed in religious rituals or theatrical performances. The study and presentation of the technological wonders of antiquity reflect the compelling relationship between humans, art, and science, as well as the importance attributed to the wondrous character of technological and mechanical advancement.
The lecture is organised by KELOPOS in collaboration with the Programme “Studies in Hellenic Culture” of the Open University of Cyprus.
