Professor Stephanos Efthymiades

Stephanos is Professor of Byzantine Literature in the Program in Hellenic Culture at the Open University of Cyprus. He holds a PhD in Byzantine hagiology from the University of Oxford and BA degrees in Law (University of Athens) and Greek Literature (University of Crete). He has published extensively on Byzantine hagiography, historiography, and prosopography. He co-edited (with Alicia Simpson) Niketas Choniates: a Historian and a Writer (La Pomme d’Or, Geneva 2009). A volume of his collected articles on Byzantine hagiography appeared in the Variorum Collected Studies series in 2011. He is also editor of the two-volume Ashgate Research Companion to Byzantine Hagiography (2011 and 2014). His most recent monograph, The Hagiography of Byzantine Cyprus (4th–13th c.), was published in Greek by the Cyprus Research Centre (Nicosia 2021). He is currently preparing the English edition for Cambridge University Press and working on a monograph on the political and social history of Hagia Sophia of Constantinople.
